😎 It’s a kick-your-feet-up kind of Friday

Plus, a promising vaccine and the end of an era in Miami journalism.

Folks, it’s Friday.

Can you feel that? The wind breezing through your hair, the caress of cold air brushing against your face? There’s been so much going on in Miami this week that we haven’t even had the space to note how spectacular the weather’s been for the last few days. Granted, we seem to recall it didn’t take until mid-November for it to get this nice in years past, but it’s a Friday in 2020 baby — take a break from the alarming climate change headlines and soak up the refreshing ambiance 🏝.

So kick back, relax, situate yourself in a socially distanced place outdoors, and get cozy with your last newsletter of the week…

💧What Miami is talking about

💉 In case you missed it, Jackson Memorial Hospital will be one of the first Florida hospitals to receive a promising COVID-19 vaccine. The Miami medical center could receive the vaccine developed by Pfizer as soon as next month — the plan is to give it to health care workers, first responders, and long-term residents first. (NBC 6 South Florida)

😷 While the prospect of an effective coronavirus vaccine is comforting, Florida’s lack of action around the pandemic is, uh, decidedly not! Some local officials evidently agree: Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber was among the bipartisan coalition of Florida mayors who asked Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday to step up the state’s response and allow municipalities to reinstate restrictions. (Miami Herald)

👾 Club Space is harnessing the limitless capacity for love and positive vibes of the dance floor and channeling it all into a good, collegiate cause. The downtown Miami institution is accepting applications for the Space Scholarship program, which will provide three $4,000 academic awards each school year to BIPOC and undocumented students in South Florida. The scholarship is available to folks hoping to work in the arts or the hospitality industry. You can donate to the scholarship fund now as well as submit an application of your own — the deadline is December 31. (Club Space)

✍️ Miami blogger and muckraker Al Crespo has announced he’s retiring from journalism and closing the book on his site the Crespogram. Despite having no formal training as a journalist, Crespo spent the last decade digging into public records and dutifully documenting Magic City corruption in his inimitable style. If you’ve read an absurd, shocking story about Miami officials behaving badly since 2010, there’s a very strong chance you’re familiar with his work. If you have a drink this weekend, we invite you to raise one to him 🍻. (Miami New Times)
