About as flexible as a rock? Learn from this Miamian and her yoga instructor

We asked New Tropic readers to tell us one wellness goal they’re trying to reach, and then we chose six of them to pair with fitness and wellness experts across the 305 who are helping them achieve those goals.

The catch? Each challenger has to keep us updated on their progress and share all their best tips and advice along the way. Our hope is everyone in our community can learn from the advice experts give our challengers.

So help us in cheering on each of our challengers. Now meet one of those brave Miamians:

Valerie Trueba

Wellness goal: To become more flexible so she can practice things like yoga and pilates.

Why she wants to achieve it: “Right now if I try to do yoga or pilates, I end up leaving really angry just because I can’t do it. They’re on step eight and I’m still stuck on step one, and it’s just really frustrating to do that.”

Update #1
We asked Valerie: Does reaching your wellness goal feel impossible to you? Why or why not? What’s the first step you’re taking to try and reach it?

“The first step I’m taking is really just making sure I’m getting some kind of stretching in everyday. No excuses. It’s half about committing to a few minutes of mindfulness thought and half about opening up my joints that get so tight from sitting during office hours.”

Update #2
We asked Valerie: What’s one thing you tried to do this week to reach your goal? What did you learn?

“Unfortunately, I have to have surgery on both of my legs early next week. I’ll be limited in what I can do for about two or three weeks after that – walking, light activity. Hopefully after about a week and a half or two weeks I’ll be able to get back to my regular routine. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about stretching, it’s that if you don’t keep at it, you’ll lose the progress… so, I’ll try my best to not let this down time be an obstacle.” mSpy is a mobile monitoring app that can be installed on your child’s phone, and allows you to monitor their phone calls, social media activity, instant messages, locations and a lot more.
