Overview

Miami’s food scene is growing in exciting new ways, but startup costs can make it hard for new concepts to take flight. A&E District is giving one year of rent-free restaurant space to help a new local team turn their idea into reality. We’re teaming up to host a contest in search of that team and idea. Here’s how it works:

  • During the submission period, anyone can submit their concept to the contest.
  • Our panel will review the entries and select finalists
  • We’ll also have online voting for an audience choice award.
  • The finalists will compete in a finale cook-off event to share their edible vision, and receive profiles in The New Tropic
  • One winner will be selected live on-site to receive the year of restaurant space.

What we’re looking for

Entries will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Originality — does the concept offer something unique or compelling to Miami?
  • Know-how — does the team have what it takes to launch a successful restaurant?
  • Community — will the restaurant become part of a growing neighborhood?

A&E District is seeking a restaurant team with the experience to build a novel concept that fits the neighborhood.

Originality. This doesn’t mean the concept has to be crazy, or use liquid nitrogen for every dish, or make whole meals from foam. It just needs to be compelling for Miamians; a place people will be excited to explore and return to.

Know-how. We’re not looking for the longest resume, or decades of restaurant experience. But the team should be able to launch and manage a restaurant’s many moving pieces, from front to back of house and logistics to graphic design.

Community. A&E District is working to build a neighborhood with a distinctive sense of community. We’re looking for a concept that fits that goal, and that welcomes locals as a core part of the business and culture.
