Art Days: Take Flight with Kites

Join the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science on its Museum Plaza for “Take Flight with Kites” during Art Days 2017 and learn about the history of kites and how they fly. Make a kite and then flex your creative muscles to decorate your kite and make it your own. Launch your kite with friends and family in Museum Park after your visit to Frost Science.

Did you know? In the 18th and 19th centuries, kites were used as vehicles and tools for scientific research. Men like Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Wilson used their knowledge of kite flying to learn more about the wind and weather. Sir George Cayley, Samuel Langley, Lawrence Hargrave, Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers all experimented with kites and contributed to development of the airplane. The US National Weather Service flew kites designed by William Eddy and Lawrence Hargraves to raise meteorological instruments and cameras.

Presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority, Art Days 2017 kicks off the arts season with events and exhibitions around Downtown Miami. For more information on Art Days 2017, please visit www.dwntwnartdays.com.

PLEASE NOTE: Kite workshop is free. Admission rates apply for museum entry. Each family will receive one kite making kit per child with instructions on how to prepare the kite. Frost Science ambassadors will help guide the activity while allowing guests to learn more about the museum’s exhibition, Feathers to the Stars, which explores the past, present and future of flight.

This event takes place outside. Sunblock is highly recommended.
