Hands Across The Sand
South Floridians are invited show their support for clean energy policy by joining the Hands Across The Sand event May 20 on Miami Beach.
Organizers from Urban Paradise Guild and the Miami chapter of Surfrider Foundation expect an unbroken chain of hundreds of supporters stretching several blocks along the shoreline.
In 2016, the event attracted about 300 participants. However, many more are expected this year due to backlash against the Trump administration’s anti-environmental policies, including the Executive Order that could open oil drilling off the Atlantic coast.
“These short-sighted efforts to extract dirty fossil fuels are the opposite of smart investment in clean energy, and they fail to honor our nation’s pledge to international agreements to fight climate change,” said Mike Gibaldi of Surfrider Foundation Miami. “The dangerous impacts of these actions will affect people across the world, but especially our tourism-dependent Florida coastal communities.”
Hands Across the Sand is one of hundreds of synchronized events globally on May 20 to raise awareness about the dangers of dirty fuels and the need to speed the transition to available, affordable clean energy solutions.
Participation is free and supporters should gather on the beach in the 500 block of Ocean Drive at 11:30. The official locking of hands will occur at noon. For more information, visit www.handsacrossthesand.org.
