KILN TOUR: Art by FIRE

Explore the use of FIRE in making visual art.

A Kiln Tour will take place on Saturday, April 8, 2017 as part of Tigertail’s April-long FIRE festival. The Kiln Tour is a free, day-long, visual arts adventure. Four artists who utilize fire in the creation of their work will open their studios to the public. Visit any or all four events. There is no charge.

11:00am to 12:30pm: At his studio at The Ceramic League of Miami, 8873 SW 129th Street, Miami 33176, Polo Ramirez will demonstrate his ceramic creation. A Pre-Columbian descendant who uses the Paleteado technique, Ramirez’ pieces are pit fired with wood. The works represent the duality of his life, smooth and rough. Designs and colors are inspired by his life and ancestors.

3:00 to 4:00pm: Artist Jenna Efrein will share her technique and process for creating sculptural glass works at the Bakehouse Arts Complex, 561 NW 32nd Street, Miami 33127. In Bakehouse’s Outside Studio #66, Efrein will demonstrate her work with a 4000-degree flameworking torch that melts glass.

5:00 to 6:00pm: Carolina Sardi will demonstrate yet another approach to creating works with a fire implement. Sardi creates sculptures and installations by drawing on, then cutting, sheets of steel with a plasma torch. Her studio is located at 260 NE 60th Street, Miami 33137.

7:00 to 9:00pm: The tour ends with an event at Miami Industrial Arts (MIA), 300 NW 73rd Street, Miami 33150. James Herring, a Miami Industrial Arts member and ceramicist, will demonstrate a Raku kiln setup. Bisque pots will be available for purchase. Visitors will be able to glaze their own piece and watch as it is fired by propane and then pulled from the kiln.
