Let’s Do Lunch!
MCCJ ENCOURAGES STRANGERS TO DO LUNCH AS PART OF CONNECT MIAMI’S TEN DAYS OF CONNECTION
Grassroots Effort Geared Towards Embracing Diversity and Building Community
MIAMI, FL, May 2017 – Over fifty organizations have banded together to take part in a grassroots effort that’s meant to get people to step outside of their comfort zone and connect with people who are not like themselves. The ten-day challenge known as Connect Miami is also meant to encourage individual engagements that build stronger relationships, kindness amongst each other and a deeper understanding of our differences. MCCJ, the non-profit organization that’s been around since 1935 and strives to embrace diversity, has taken on the challenge during one of the ten days with what they call “Let’s Do Lunch”.
On May 24th, MCCJ urges everyone to invite someone that has a different background than themselves out for lunch. People are encouraged to sign up for this at the following Eventbrite page. Some conversation starters can be found there, and organizers hope people will feel inspired to share their selfie taken during lunch on social media using the hashtag #ConnectMiami305. “We live in a highly diverse community, but we live segregated lives and rarely really get to know people who are not like us,” says Roberta Shevin, executive director for MCCJ. “We invite everyone to make a lunch date with someone whose background is different from your own. Take that risk, because when you share your stories, the stereotypes crumble, and there lies the magic behind making a connection.”
Connect Miami will officially launch with 10 Days of Connection on May 22 through the 31. It’s expected to grow each year, and organizers are excited about the possibilities. Connect Miami and 10 Days of Connection are sponsored by The Children’s Trust, MCCJ, The Miami Foundation, Miami Herald, and United Way of Miami-Dade and are being produced by Radical Partners.
