Kenny Riches’ The Strongest Man is the near epitomy of the Festival’s tongue-in-cheek slogan, “Every Character Under The Sun”. Beef (played by Miami artist Robert “Meatball” Lorie) is a dexterous Cuban construction worker with massive biceps and an even more prodigious set of curls. Despite being able to knock down physical walls with casual non-chalance, Beef can’t break through the odd sense of anxiety that looms over all his personal choices. His best friend, Conan the Korean, isn’t much help in this department – Conan has his own angst-ridden jitters, brought upon by his parents’ bewildered disapproval at his failure to follow in his older brother’s super-achieving footsteps. When Beef’s neighbor Illi talks Beef and Conan into joining her at Guru Fred’s spiritual meditation class, the pair are inspired to take their destiny into their own hands, but Miami’s eccentric landscape ably distracts them from their metaphysical quests.
Kenny Riches’ distinctive, unconventional gift for original textures recalls the deadpan genius of the early films of Hal Hartley (The Unbelieveable Truth,Trust), but with a deeper and more soulful affection for the milieu of his characters. The rising voice of the new Miami film style has found a sonorous spokesperson. – Jaie Laplante
