Parental Advisory: Sex, Music, and Censorship
Come to WEAM for a night exploring sexuality in music…and the censors trying to ruin all the fun. The evening begins with a selection of racy music videos selected by Lolo Reskin of Sweat Records. Since the ’80s, music videos have been an important medium for connecting an artist with a listener. However, some videos have been deemed so inappropriate that they’ve been banned from playing while the sun is out. Come see these controversial videos from a variety of genres, including favorites from D’Angelo, Prodigy, Fever Ray, Prince, and more.
Afterwards, enjoy complimentary cocktails by Deep Eddy Vodka as Lolo discusses the intersection of music, sexuality, kink, and queerness, along with a history of music censorship from past to present. Come learn about the origin of the Parental Advisory warning, the huge role Miami played in the battle, and the most ridiculous words still censored on the radio today.
$10 in advance, $20 at the door. Includes museum admission and complimentary drinks by Deep Eddy Vodka.
