People’s Day Of Action
Hundreds of members of labor unions, the women’s and civil rights movements, environmental justice groups, religious leaders and others will mobilize in downtown Miami as part of a massive nationwide day of action on February 24. The “Working People’s Day of Action,” convened by workers’ rights organization Jobs With Justice, will span events in dozens of cities across the country, with tens of thousands expected to join the call for an end to policies that rig the economy and political system against working people. The Working People’s Day of Action comes amid a resurgence in grassroots efforts to defend basic freedoms, including the right to join together in unions. Miami’s 20 event sponsors include SEIU, Jobs With Justice, South Florida AFL-CIO, AFSCME, United Teachers of Date, Engage Miami, State Voices, Progress Florida, People’s Progressive Caucus of Miami-Dade, New Florida Majority, Miami-Dade Democratic Party, Florida Immigrant Coalition, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Labor Community Alliance of South Florida, Southwest Florida Labor Council, Workers United, Broward Teachers Union, South Florida Building and Construction Trades Council, Broward County AFL-CIO, Palm Beach/Treasure Coast AFL-CIO. The event happens just days before the Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments in Janus v. AFSCME Council 31, a case funded by billionaires and corporate interests to attack the rights of working people across the country. At the same time, working families in Florida are standing up to legislative and political attacks on their freedom and rights on the job.
