Meet our member: Michelle Woodward

Today we’re continuing our series on the people who make what we do possible — our supporting members. ❤️ Today we’re featuring Doral’s Michelle Woodward!

Where in town might people run into you? Stuck on the 836

What local business do you think deserves a shoutout? LYNK Studio – a local, design heavy curated pop-up shop that is minimalist and tropical. And it’s run by four really talented, creative women of color. Follow them on insta, @lynkstudio.

What’s a local event you went to recently that you loved? A dinner hosted by MCCJ where I got to spend the night speaking with a diverse group of young, energetic, passionate leaders in Miami from across the spectrum, some of whom are my local heroes.

What made you decide to become a member of The New Tropic? We are facing a crisis in local news and rebuilding trust in our democracy begins with supporting local journalism to create informed communities. The New Tropic allows me to feel engaged and deeply connected to local issues in Miami.

What’s something you’re working on that you could use help with? Being philanthropic from a young age and learning that even as a young professional making a donation even if it’s small goes a long way for an organization or institution you are passionate about! It’s not just the high level donors but it’s also the small gifts that pay for the little things we don’t think about. Give Miami Day is one of my favorite days of the year because it highlights the impact of philanthropy.

If you only have one meal left in Miami, where are you going? Joe’s Stone Crab because it is the perfect blend of one-of-a-kind old Miami, delicious food and nostalgia. Long live stone crab season!

What’s a recent story you’ve read about Miami that you wish more people cared about? The brain drain, the brain drain AND * I cannot stress this enough * the brain drain. This isn’t recent but in fact a continual problem. Why are we letting so many talented, young professionals leave this city? With the ratio of high housing costs to low salaries many young people choose to live a better quality of life elsewhere. The job market is difficult and the wealth disparity creates a much divided city in terms of equity and local-based companies continue to outsource hires and let unused talent go to waste from anchor institutions like Florida International University, University of Miami and Miami Dade College. How about we start believing in our own local talent?

What’s your perfect day in our city? Heading to the farmer’s market on Sunday morning with bae, grabbing a croqueta or five at Pinecrest Bakery, going for a bike ride around Coconut Grove and hopefully spotting some cute pups along the way. OH and tacos! I love tacos!

What does it mean to you to live like you live here? Being proud of being from Miami and embracing all the pena that comes with it. 🙂

What are you celebrating in your life right now? Self growth and getting to work with amazing individuals everyday.
