Miami Gardens XPress trains to be great

Miami Gardens was most recently the host of one of the biggest sports events in the world, but their local track-and-field program has been making headlines since 2008.

Miami Gardens XPress is one of the top-ranked track-and-field programs in the country, with more than 300 members between the ages of 5 and 18. And they don’t practice on a track – they practice on grass and dirt.

Darius “Coach D” Lawshea has been coaching the team since 2008 with the motto TTBG: “Train to be great,” using track and field as a vehicle to teach these boys and girls to strive for greatness on and off the field.

The club currently holds 32 AAU national records, 11 AAU Junior Olympic records and five individual world records.

QUOTABLE: “I don’t tolerate the word good anymore. We practice for greatness.” — Coach D

FUN FACT: The club does not cut kids from the team, and practices four days a week from 5 to 6:30 at Norland Middle School.
