Tomorrow is Bandcamp Friday, when more of the money you pay for music goes directly to your favorite artists. But it’s also been a hot minute since we’ve done our infrequent This Week in Miami Music feature, so we thought we’d check in on all things musical in the 305 for the first time in a while:
- Synth-pop duo Afrobeta is debuting its new documentary “Birthright” at Miami Film Festival (which starts tomorrow!) next Saturday, March 13, and celebrating with an accompanying performance at The Black Market that same day.
- Coffintexts’ newest collection of punishing techno beats, “Connected,” is out now courtesy of L.A.-based label Matrix Funk.
- INVT & Nicholas G. Padilla were spotlighted on Bandcamp Daily’s list of best new electronic music from February for their collaborative EP “Más Ayà”. You’ll also be able to find INVT’s new sample pack on the duo’s artist page on Bandcamp Friday — it’s there for one day only, so don’t sleep!
- Jonny From Space has returned with a new seven-track EP, “Tide,” which you can cop on the DJ-producer’s Bandcamp page.
- Katiahshé has collaborated with Jacob Colon for a new string-laden afro house heater, “Don’t Stop.” The song was shared by legendary dance music label Nervous Records and features remixes by fellow Miami legends Oscar G and Oba Frank Lords.
- Nick León is following up last month’s ambient record “Gloria 2017-2019” with a virtual DJ set alongside Bitter Babe as part of ICA Miami’s virtual First Fridays series.
- The North Beach Bandshell is hosting two outdoor, socially distanced music festivals this weekend and next: Global Cuba Festival 2021 and Miami Beach Youth Music Festival.
- Multimedia experimental artist Roiju has released the last in his three-part series “prayer rune – etherworld” — you can purchase the releases on his Bandcamp page.
- Speaking of threes, Sel.6 shared the three-track “DESIRE III” on Bandcamp last month — the first two entries are available on her artist page as well.
- Suzi Analogue shared this week that her independent label, Never Normal Records, is among the first-ever recipients of the Black Independent Music Accelerator fellowship program. She also mentioned that new projects are imminent. 👀
- Sweat Records is eulogizing Daft Punk’s breakup with a very cool and extremely chic (y’know… ’cause they collaborated with Nile Rodgers? Get it?) enamel pin.
- Fans of the weekly Tuesday night Synth Battle night at Gramps take note: the long-running analog showdown is selling cool new t-shirts courtesy of Wish You Were Gear.
- Technique Records was spotlighted in a video profile by CBS Miami this week highlighting the record store’s perseverance through the pandemic and its commitment to Miami’s musical community.
- Local record label Terrestrial Funk shared its new globetrotting disco, funk, and soul compilation, “Silk Road: Journey of the Armenian Diaspora” late last month.
- The next installment of Tropico Virgo will be hosting Artime on the ones and twos at Melinda’s next Tuesday.
- And lastly, Dream Vacation head honcho Yung Algebra is spinning tunes with DJ and frozen lemonade purveyor Patrick Walsh at Over Under on Friday, March 5.
