WHAT’S NEW IN THE 305

Heavy stuff. Miami Seaquarium orca Lolita has long been a cause for the “Free the Whales” camp, but many killer whale experts argue that her release into the wild or a sanctuary after 47 years in captivity could be disastrous. Still, some think it’s worth trying to give Lolita a better life. (Miami Herald)

Travel on us. Execs at Visit Florida, our state’s tourism promotion agency, have spent some serious cash traveling around the world to promote Florida. Over the past 14 months, $150,000 of taxpayer money sent four execs jet-setting to Sao Paulo, Reykjavik and beyond. (Miami Herald)

Say cheese! A six-foot American crocodile was spotted in the surf of Hollywood Beach yesterday. It was a surprise for beachgoers who — of course — posed for selfies with the croc. (CBS Local)

Thumbs up. Plans for North Miami’s Chinatown district were approved by the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency. The plans include vertical gardens, an open-air canopy and a pagoda gazebo inspired by China’s Han dynasty. (Curbed Miami)

¿Cómo se dice, “earworm”? “Despacito” was named Song of the Year at the Latin Grammy’s last week, so what comes next? WLRN interviewed Louie Perez of Los Lobos, famous for their 1987 hit “La Bamba,” to get an idea of what Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee can expect after having a huge Spanish hit in the States.
