People credit Art Basel with driving Miami’s art renaissance, but The New York Times – and many of the Miamians they interviewed – say it’s actually the Knight Foundation, which awarded $2.5 million to various local arts organizations on Monday night, the 10-year anniversary of the Knight Arts Challenge. Don’t sleep on these folks who are transforming the Miami arts scene 52 weeks a year.

Gift bags. SCOPE International Art Fair attendees are getting an unusual giveaway this year: Narcan, which can rescue people from an opioid overdose. The opioid crisis is rocking the U.S. right now, and SoFlo is no exception. The artist involved says he’s doing this to raise awareness. (Miami Herald)

Pay up.  When Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez came into office, the county was in the middle of a recession and he gave himself a major pay cut to help balance the budget. Now that the county is back on its feet, he’s pitching himself for a raise. (Miami Herald)

Rocky times. The western edge of Miami-Dade County is supposed to be a pretty peaceful place – that’s why many folks move out there. But daily mining explosions at nearby limestone quarries are making residents’ lives pretty miserable, shaking their homes, interrupting their days, and causing all kinds of structural damage that they have to pay for. We’re #1! Miami International Airport is the most connected airport in the U.S. as far as transit options go, and it’s all because of our good old-fashioned buses. We know, we were shocked too. (Miami Herald)

Not okay. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, aka ICE, showed up at Sen. Marco Rubio’s local office while protesters calling for protection for Dreamers demonstrated outside. Immigrant advocates say it’s an attempt to intimidate Dreamers and others with uncertain immigration status into silence. (Miami Herald)
