🍈 Mango fails

The Museum of Ice Cream is here and it is entirely millennial pink.

SPRINT TO THE FINISH

Is Basel f’ing over yet? Nope.

But if you can deal with the traffic for just three more days, this weekend is still full of dope stuff to do. Our Basel events guide should help you out.

Plus, there’s one more opportunity to hang with us – on Saturday our own Chris Adamo will be on a panel with Superfine! – The Fair founder Alex Mitow and OUTShine Film Festival director Victor Gimenez talking about how film and art influence each other, especially in the context of LGBT issues. They’ll be showing a series of queer short films before and after, so take a break from looking at paintings, rest your feet, and enjoy some gourmet popcorn. Deets here.

Made Possible by WeWork

WE’RE GETTING A LITTLE LOOSE THIS WEEKEND.

… With our Instagram account, that is.

So you can see as much of Basel as possible, we’re handing it over to three duos who are killing it on the local art and nightlife scene. Tonight Superfine! leaders Alex Mitow and James Miille will take over from their Young Collector’s Social, and wherever the night takes them from there.

Tomorrow, nightlife power couple John Cicero and Teresa Cesario, responsible for throwing some of Absolut Elyx and Bacardi’s best local events, will have the wheel.

On Sunday night, get down with Umi Selah and Aja Monet, who will be bringing us into their magical backyard for a special Basel edition of Smoke Signals, their monthly gathering of creatives in Little Haiti.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE 305

Pobrecitos. This Bon Appetit video of people struggling to slice a mango is kind of painful to watch. (If you don’t really know how to either, it’s ok – there’s a tutorial at the end. Also, why isn’t there a mango emoji yet?)

Daaang. The Coral Gables City Commission just voted to give another $15 million to the Underline, the linear park underneath the Metrorail. The new dough brings the project within $15 million of the $100 million needed for the whole thang. We see you killing it, Underline. (Miami Herald)

WTH. Pine rocklands used to dominate South Florida’s landscape, but only 2 percent of the original forest is left  – and wildlife officials just approved a Walmart and strip mall to be built right in the middle of a big chunk of it. Officials say the construction wouldn’t threaten any of the endangered plants or animals that live there. Wanna know more about the pine rocklands? We dove in earlier this year. (Miami Herald, The New Tropic)

Big deal. Efforts to turn Little Haiti into a tech hub just got a big boost – Guy Laliberté, the founder of Cirque Du Soleil, has just become a partner in the Magic City Innovation District. The plan for a tech campus in Little Haiti has techies and developers excited, but it has longtime residents panicked about losing their neighborhood. Skyrocketing rents have already displaced scores of them. (BisNow)

#MeToo. As sexual harassment allegations rock the whole U.S., the Miami-Dade County school board is worried students don’t know how to report sexual harassment and impropriety. So they just voted to launch an education campaign to teach them. “Be the one who drags someone from the dark shadows of abuse into the light,” Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said. (Miami Herald)

The honeymoon is over. The City of Miami mayor holds very little actual power to govern, so choosing the city manager is one of the most important things the mayor does. The new mayor, Francis Suarez, has his man, but newly elected Commissioner Joe Carollo is vowing to fight Suarez’s pick. How this goes will dictate a lot about the next four years in Miami. (Miami Herald)

History lesson. This is why Miami is called the Magic City. (Miami.com)

THAT’S ALL FOR THE WEEK.

We’ll leave you with some final pro tips to end Art Week right: Check out our full Basel Bible, especially the traffic tips. Drink lots of water. Always say yes.
