❄️ The Uggs are out

Beyonce is all of us leaving the house this morning.

JINGLE BELLS

The holiday season is officially upon us. And while we might do the holidays a little differently here without all that snow, our Christmas lights game is still on point.

We’re on the hunt for the best holiday lighting displays in the 305 and could use a little help. If you spot some impressive homes in your neighborhood (or maybe it’s your own!), snap a pic and let us know where you saw it. We’ll share back the best ones with all of you. You can tag us on Insta at @thenewtropic or shoot us an e-mail at [email protected].

WHAT'S NEW IN THE 305

Blame the Russians. The Art Miami fair was delayed Saturday morning when security dogs reacted to a crate at the fair. When police opened it up, they found “a punky portrait of Hillary Clinton in a studded jacket and shaggy pink haircut, in a neon picture frame.” Still no word on what set the dogs off. 🤔 (Miami Herald)

Hold up. Last week wildlife officials gave the OK to build a Walmart and strip mall on some of the only remaining pine rockland habitat in South Florida. Bulldozers quickly got to work, but so did several environmental groups. They sued, and a judge has ordered a stop to all construction while the case is heard. (Miami Herald)

Touchdown. Every single player on the Miami Dolphins is now registered to vote. (AP)

Guinea pig. A pretty controversial education experiment is about to go down in Liberty City – KIPP, a national nonprofit charter school chain, is going to take over half of Poinciana Park Elementary School’s campus for $1 a year. There’s already a lot of debate about some of the district’s funds going to charter schools, and some school board members are worried that putting a district school and a charter school side by side could lead to major inequality on the campus. (WLRN)

Oops. Miami-Dade cops are giving out fewer tickets – not because we’re driving better (LOL), but because the police department is running out of paper ticket books. The electronic system that’s supposed to replace the paper one is way delayed and the department is worried its stock of paper tickets won’t last until it launches in January. (Miami Herald)

Sweet pic. Posting a photo of just the outside of the new Museum of Ice Cream almost broke our Insta account (we’re pretty sure that’s a record number of likes for us). So you’re probably gonna go nuts over this photo tour of the inside of the museum. (Miami.com)

SMH. Miami Beach has to give the federal government back $1 million in affordable housing funds because it misspent that money, according to an audit from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. That’s a damn shame, because Miami Beach has a major affordable housing crisis that is driving service workers – the backbone of the tourist industry – off the Beach entirely. (Miami New Times)

THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY.

Stay warm out there on the tundra, friends.
