We know our startup scene is killin’ it in many ways – but when it comes to jobs, many are still on the struggle bus.
The number of people with tech skills is growing, but the number of jobs for them isn’t, at least not fast enough. It’s a big change from our earlier problem – a lack of locals with tech skills, period – but it’s still a big challenge.
We chatted up four jobseekers and one employer to hear their takes on what it takes to job hunt in South Florida.
Brace yourself. White nationalist Richard Spencer is speaking at UF later this week. Worried about violence like that which followed Spencer’s march through the University of Virginia campus in August, Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in Gainesville’s Alachua County. (Miami Herald)
Cheers! The Miami Dolphins set an NFL record in 1972 by finishing the season undefeated. In the 45 years since, no other NFL team has pulled that off. And when the leading team in the league gets its first loss each season, meaning the Dolphins’ record is safe for another year, Funky Buddha Brewery releases its limited-edition Undefeated Saison to toast in the most fitting way. ¿Hablas inglés? Miami is the only major city in the U.S. where English is the dominant language being studied by locals via the language app Duolingo. (Miami New Times)
I get by with a little help from my friends. Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, a Republican running for outgoing Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s congressional seat, said in a 2009 TV interview that three extraterrestrial beings visited her when she was seven, and have… communicated… with her at several other points in her life since. Meanwhile, another Democrat has thrown his hat into the ring: City of Miami Commissioner Ken Russell announced his candidacy this weekend. No alien encounters were mentioned. (Miami Herald)
Can’t win. Much of the debris getting picked up from the streets of City of Miami is ending up in Virginia Key, which has become a debris “staging site.” While city residents are stoked to get the piles of branches and random things, like furniture, off their sidewalks and streets, it’s turning the state park into a stinky, mucky mess, workers say. Decision time. The county commission adopted a resolution asking the Department of Homeland Security to extend Haiti’s “temporary protected status,” which allows Haitians to temporarily stay in the U.S. until Haiti is considered safe for return. DHS is scheduled to make a decision on Nov. 23 – and is expected to end TPS. (Miami New Times)
Overwhelmed Fifty thousand people showed up Sunday to sign up for food stamps for Hurricane Irma victims. The turnout totally floored state officials, who said they were seeing 10,000 a day before that (still shocking, TBH). Were you turned away because they ran out? WLRN has info on what to do.
