We woke up like this

COME HAVE A SLAMMING GOOD TIME

Miami New Drama’s latest play is here, and it’s a body-slamming satire of American politics, race, and stereotypes.

Have you ever seen a theater turned into a boxing ring? Did you binge watch Glow? Do you love reality television?

If you answered yes to any or all of those questions, then come with us. Tomorrow night we’re taking a field trip to the Colony Theater on Lincoln Road to catch the 8 p.m. performance of “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity,” which will offer a version of all of the above.

Miami New Drama is offering audience members from The New Tropic great discounts on premium seats, a glass of sangria, and the opportunity to get in the ring with a legit pro wrestler, if you’ve got the guts.

Join our crew. Deets, including info on purchasing discounted tickets, here.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE 305

Is nothing sacred? First it was the star players. Now it’s the man who plays Billy the Marlin who’s been booted from the team.  He’d been wearing the suit for the past 14 years. Although he’s now gone, Billy the Marlin, the mascot, will be sticking around. (Miami Herald)

Not so fast. Last February Miami-Dade County voted to abandon its sanctuary city status, which means it now holds undocumented immigrants until federal immigration authorities can take over. Mayor Carlos Gimenez said the change had to happen for Miami-Dade to keep getting federal funds and that it would only cost the county about $52,000 a year more to hold all these extra prisoners. Um, no. A new report from local activist groups puts the cost at more than $13 MILLION one year in. (CBS)

#Wynning. Wyncode has launched a new UX/UI program to address Miami’s need for digital designers, which has grown way faster than the number of people with the skills. Even better: Students in the first cohort won’t have to pay a dime until they’ve gotten a job after finishing the program. (Miami Herald)

Boomtown. Housing prices are rising all over the 305, but in Edgewater, Buena Vista, Little Haiti, Coral Gables, and Silver Bluff, they’re legit booming, with prices more than doubling in some zip codes. (The Real Deal)

Pro tip: Don’t be so frat-tastic. FIU temporarily shut down all campus sororities and fraternities last year after a string of issues with Greeks behaving badly. This week, most of the chapters got the OK to reopen under one condition: no alcohol. Three fraternities were suspended. (Miami Herald)

Power to the people. Publix may make awesome subs, but its policy record isn’t so great. Last month the grocery store chain was accused of denying coverage of HIV prevention medication to its employees. The public backlash was so swift and strong that Publix has already changed its mind. The Miami New Times has a rundown of a bunch of other times Publix has been accused of mistreating its LGBTQ workers. (WLRN, Miami New Times)

Treat yo’self. Not satisfied by doughnuts alone? Head to Happy Place Doughnuts, a new SoBe spot owned by the founder of LIV. Unsurprisingly, it’s offering up doughnut-mojito pairings, like a sugar cane guava mojito to go with your guava and cream cheese doughnut. Sounds like a great-tasting bad decision to us. (Miami.com)

THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY.

Anyone want to join us for a doughnut break?
