Traffic signals in Miami are about to get a lot more efficient, hopefully taking a big chunk out of your commute. Some of these “Smart Signals” have already been installed around the county, and Miami-Dade Transit is planning to install nearly 2,800 more this year. Make it rain. The county commission has created a massive new tax zone to fund transit work. Its plan is for the property tax revenue from that zone – about $2 billion, it estimates – to pay for transit projects. But there’s a downside: that means that money isn’t going to things like parks, police, and roads. (Miami Herald)

Meanwhile… Remember that half-penny tax we approved 15 years ago that was supposed to go toward rail expansion, and didn’t? There’s a bill moving through the Florida legislature that could force local governments to spend voter-approved transit tax money, like the half-penny tax, on new mass transit lines. But Miami-Dade warns that could have major consequences. Right now a lot of that money funds bus lines, which will face cutbacks if the bill passes. (Miami Herald)

Call your office. Earlier this week, immigrant rights groups came out with a report about the consequences of Miami-Dade’s decision to ditch its sanctuary city status. According to the report, 98 percent of the people turned over to immigration authorities for deportation were first-time offenders. But the county says “nope.” That number is more like 30 percent. Where’d that bad data come from? The county. It says it’ll have correct numbers next week. Meanwhile, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez says the whole report is “hogwash.” (Miami Herald)

Zip it. Amazon wants the finalist cities for its second headquarters to stop their blabbing, and it looks like local politicians are gonna be signing non-disclosure agreements to make sure that happens. The City of Miami Commission voted unanimously this week to sign them, along with the city manager and other administrators. That will make Amazon happy, but some folks say that leaving locals in the dark makes it more likely that residents will get a bad deal. (Miami Herald)
