YASSSS. Salty Donut, Miami’s first artisanal doughnut shop, is opening a second location in South Miami. 🎉 This one has an exciting addition: an open kitchen so you can watch the magic happen. (Miami New Times)

Cruise control. After an autonomous Uber vehicle hit and killed a woman in Arizona this weekend, Uber halted tests of its autonomous vehicles across the U.S. But Ford, which began piloting its own self-driving cars right here in the 305 last month, says it’s going to keep going with its own test. (Miami Herald)

Shaky ground. The FIU pedestrian bridge was touted as an innovative project, but experts say it was actually a modernized version of an old bridge design that is vulnerable if even one structural piece is damaged. Experts are zeroing in on that as a potential reason why the bridge collapsed last week. (Miami Herald)

Sick burn. FIU has invited climate change denier James Taylor to debate a climate change activist at its global warming conference next week. We almost feel bad for Taylor trying to argue climate change doesn’t exist in the middle of Miami Beach, but John Morales, who became a local hero for his updates during Hurricane Irma, definitely isn’t holding back – he’s refused to moderate the debate. “Instead, I’m moderating a #sealevelrise panel the next day, and countering the misinformation by training students on the scientific method and False Balance in journalism,” Morales tweeted. I will have a very very recent example.” Burn. (Miami New Times)

Hungover. South Beach got so cray this weekend that it was even too much for infamous Ocean Drive spots like Mango’s and the Clevelander, who had to either close or shut down their outdoor eating areas for awhile. Miami Beach says it’s had enough, and commissioners are brainstorming ways to tone the party down in 2019. Suggestions include banning scooter rentals when huge crowds are expected and blasting classical music from public speakers. Yes, really. (Miami Herald)

Show me the money. Local startups have long pointed to funding as the biggest challenge they face here in SoFlo. So it’s pretty exciting that the $400 million Silicon Valley fund 500 Startups has made Miami its first spot on the east coast. Tech leaders say that will make it easier for companies to stay here in Miami when they’re ready to scale. (Miami Herald)

Not so fast. Coral Gables’ bold effort to challenge the state law prohibiting local governments from making their own gun laws is officially over. City commissioners decided the punishments – $5,000 fines and possible removal from office – and potential lawsuits from gun shops were just too much. But the game’s not totally over here in the 305 – the City of Miami is still looking for ways to challenge that same state law in court. (Miami Herald)
