We're a little envious of this morning routine in Coconut Grove.

MIND-READING MEDITATION

From underwater pilates to hot yoga, there are all kinds of unique and kinda intense ways to get fit in the Magic City.

While we’re guessing most of you stick with something pretty basic: a nice jog, maybe an exercise class at your gym, have you ever wondered what else is out there?

Wonder no more. We hit up a few spots and all week we’ll be featuring some of the less… conventional… ways locals are working on their fitness and wellness, whether that’s creative forms of meditation or literally chilling in a freezing tube.

First up: Innergy Meditation in Miami Beach to learn about Muse, a brain-sensing headband (yes, you read that right) that helps you focus as you meditate. Head to our Instagram account to watch our story and share your best meditation tips for a chance to be featured.

MADE POSSIBLE BY BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH FLORIDA

WHAT'S NEW IN THE 305

Sound off. After the Parkland shooting, Gov. Scott set up a website for the public to give input on how they were feeling. More than a thousand replies later, here are a few things we know: people are angry, scared, and bewildered. They want more school security and more mental health professionals. And even a lot of self-identified Republicans want more gun control. (Tampa Bay Times)

“Working from home.” Teachers are very aware of South Florida’s affordable housing crisis – with an average starting salary of $42,000, many of them are living it (we’re 47th of 50 major American cities when it comes to teacher salaries relative to rent). To help teachers out, the county’s housing department and Miami-Dade County Public Schools have an intriguing proposal: build affordable residential units on school property at new and existing schools. (Miami Herald)

Like a boss. It’s old news that the restaurant business is a male-dominated one – just take a look at any recent list of James Beard Award nominees. So we’re stoked to see these 14 badass local female chefs getting some credit, and we’re bookmarking their restaurants on Yelp. (PureWow)

Nice try. The City of Miami Commission made waves last year when it evicted Flagstone Island Gardens’ from its site on Watson Island, saying the company defaulted on its contract. The decision was a BFD – local governments here aren’t exactly known for standing up to developers. But Flagstone sued, and the verdict is in: a judge says it’s the city that violated the lease by tryin’ to evict Flagstone. The city’s debating whether to appeal. (SFBJ)

Officially old. The insanely popular Ultra Music Festival began as an offshoot of Winter Music Conference, which was once one of the biggest music industry events of the year and once included 500 events over 10 days. But today many of Ultra’s attendees hadn’t even heard of the conference. This year it was a mere three days and was held at the Faena Forum, far from the crowds of Downtown and South Beach. (MIami Herald)

Get in line. Miami-Dade’s the only county in Florida that doesn’t have an elected sheriff; we have an appointed police director instead. But the state’s Constitutional Review Commission wants us to get in line – so they’re considering putting a change on the November ballot. It’s controversial because while it only affects Miami-Dade, the whole state would vote on it, meaning that voters from as far away as the Panhandle could decide on a pretty important issue for SoFlo. P.S. Here are all the proposals that the commission sent to the drafting committee to be written up. (Miami Herald, flcrc.gov)

THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY.

We’ll catch you mañana. 👋
