AVOIDING THE SNACK DRAWER

This week’s wellness tip comes to you from April Dobbins, one of the six Miamians taking on our wellness challenge.

April wants to improve her diet and exercise more and got paired up with dietitian Susan Nowrouzi to reach her goal.

Her biggest challenge to overcome? Letting go of carbs and generally eating healthier. Here are some tips she’s learned:

  • Meal prepping for lunch every day with smaller portions and healthier options
  • Discovering delicious ways to eat beets, cabbage, zucchini and squash
  • Avoiding the super-tempting snack drawer at her office (the meal prep helps!)
  • Allowing yourself one cheat meal a week

We’ll continue to share out tips from each of our challengers each week.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE 305

Reality check. Lawmakers have been hosting town halls across the country to talk about gun control, but they’ve been wildly different from place to place. While in Parkland talk has focused on better laws and mental health, in places like Miami Gardens facing high crime rates, the priorities are much different. “Our communities don’t care about whether you do a background check,” State Rep. Shevrin Jones said at a recent town hall in Miami Gardens. “Because we’re not going to the store to buy a gun. We’re going to buy them illegally.” (Miami Herald)

To that point… Yesterday four people were gunned down at the Liberty Square housing project in Liberty City, and two of them later died. The shooting happened near where four-year-old Nyla Jones was killed just last weekend. Some residents suspect the violence is the result of a gang rivalry between Liberty City and Brownsville – and they’re wondering if people will march in protest of their community violence, too. (Miami Herald)

Party time. Miami Beach seems to have decided on a tactic for bringing some order to the “chaos” of Urban Beach Weekend, an informal, controversial festival of parties and concerts on Memorial Day Weekend. The city is planning to put on tons of programming –  including a gospel performance, a celebrity basketball game, and a barbecue contest – in hopes that the weekend, which brings tens of thousands of visitors to Miami Beach, will be a bit calmer, but still inclusive. (Miami Herald)

No worries. Last week we shared news about a new Florida law that blocks local governments from taking steps to allow the public to access privately owned beaches (unless they sue). But turns out we don’t have much to worry about in South Florida – all of the beachfront in MIami Beach is owned by the city, and the Key Biscayne parks are all state parks. (Miami Herald)

The city of the side hustle. Even Dwyane Wade has a side hustle – the basketball star and his equally fabulous wife Gabrielle Union are moonlighting as home flippers in an upcoming episode of a new HGTV show called “All-Star Flip.” As long as he takes care of that wrist, we’re OK with this career. Last call. Heart nightclub is closing its doors, and its last hurrah is this Friday with superstar DJ Paul van Dyk. The OG late night/early morning spot is surrendering in its long battle with Downtown residents and the City of Miami over noise violations. Heart moved into the neighborhood when it was a pretty desolate spot, but in the last few years the number of downtown residents have boomed, and they’re not about that 3 a.m. bass. (Miami New Times)

Guess who’s back? There’s another person considering running for that empty District 5 county commission seat whose name you’ll recognize: Michael Grieco. The uber popular former Miami Beach commissioner was a candidate for mayor last year – until he got caught accepting illegal campaign donations. As part of his plea deal he’s not allowed to run for office while on probation, but he’s asking the judge to reconsider. It seems like he thinks locals are ready to give him another chance. (Miami Herald)

THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY.

Stay fabulous.
