🍍Come bob for tropical fruit with us tomorrow. 🍍

About 10 hours until the weekend and this bliss.

DON'T FORGET...

Our rescheduled Day of Thrones is this Saturday (aka tomorrow) at Margaret Pace Park in Edgewater. The $5 tickets will get you an epic day of poetry and field day games with your friends, t-shirts, and an O, Miami tote bag (while supplies last). Buy tickets here or when you arrive. Invite your friends to join you here!

A MONTH OF SAVING THE EARTH

We’re wrapping our month of sharing easy ways you can help out the earth. And last but not least, here are local groups working on environmental issues 365 days a year that you can link up with to do your part. Most of them organize regular cleanups, as well as other environmental volunteer and education opportunities:

Did we miss someone? Let us know and we’ll add them to the list.

In case you missed it, we’ve already gone over how to recycle right in Miami, how to compost, and ways to reduce your waste. We also encouraged readers to make a pledge to do one thing differently this year to help the earth. It’s not too late to make yours! Find the thread here.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE 305

Drivers beware this weekend. There are construction road closures all over the county, including major spots like Collins Avenue and I-95, and it’s going to make driving a headache. Here’s a rundown of all of them. (Curbed)

Speaking of which…. Our commuters are growing faster than almost any other city in the U.S. In the last decade, the number of commuters who travel at least an hour and a half to work – “supercommuters” – has increased almost 29 percent. Only Boston grew faster. Although places like New York and D.C. still have a larger percentage of residents who fit this bill, those are areas with great regional transit, meaning many of those commuters are traveling by train. Most SoFlo residents are stuck at the steering wheel. (Miami Herald)

We think Bryan Norcross is behind this. Scientists may have figured out what causes hurricanes to intensify rapidly and out of the blue – like Irma did last year when it surged to a category 5. For years they’ve been studying what happens around one of these superstorms, like the ocean temperature and moisture in the atmosphere. Turns out that they should be looking at what’s happening inside. (Miami Herald)

FINALLY. The regional high speed rail Brightline will begin running demo service down to Miami this week as it preps for the official opening in the coming weeks. That means it will miss the promised opening day of late April, but soon enough it will be running once an hour from the MiamiCentral station on the edge of Overtown. 🙌  (SFBJ)

Their turn. The whole country is talking about the Parkland students, but right here in our own backyard, high school students from neighborhoods like Liberty City and Miami Gardens are organizing and taking control of the debate about gun violence. They’re planning protests, pitching policy solutions, and hatching plans to make politicians pay attention to their problems. (WLRN)

Take a hike. The Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition has wrapped up an epic seven-day trek and paddle through the state’s few remaining wild areas in South and Central Florida. Its goal was to understand how animals would handle having to cross the I-4 highway and to advocate for building underpasses that they can use instead. “An animal that’s deep in the forest in one of these swamps may live 99 percent of its life away from the noises of man and then coming into proximity with the Interstate is just a wall of sound and vibration and speed it doesn’t contemplate – it hasn’t had to deal with ever in its life,” said one of the expedition members. (WLRN)

Take a bow. There are only a couple weeks left of New World Symphony’s 2017-18 season, so this is a good time to remind everyone how incredible their work is. Initiatives like WALLCAST and Pulse have not only changed how Miamians think about the institution, they’ve changed the way people think about classical music nationwide. We’ll miss them this summer. Keep an eye on our calendar below for some of their final events of the year, including a WALLCAST this weekend. (Art Burst Miami)
