A WHAT MASSAGE?!

CIC’s celebrating its second birthday with a bash featuring community partner activations, drinks and bites, and some special treats — including a “mind massage” from Pathwaves, a CIC client.

Pathwaves has created a program that integrates neuroscience, technology, mindfulness, meditation, psychology, and cognitive behavior techniques to help people overcome anxiety, mood issues, sleep challenges, lack of focus, poor memory, anger, and physical manifestations of stress. Ryan Landau, chief health integrator at Pathwaves, describes it as a “mind gym” to help you stay mentally and emotionally fit.

And just like the gym, it takes practice to find peace of mind. “If you’re in charge of how you function,” Landau says, “then your past isn’t, the world around you isn’t, and you’re pretty free to do what you want.”

Ready to find some zen? You can try Pathwaves’ tech-enabled meditation “mind massages” at CIC’s anniversary event, on Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. As Landau says, “It’s like meditating with training wheels.” Om yeah.

WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?

Thanksgiving will be here in just a few days and it’s got us thinking a lot about what we’re thankful for here in the 305. We know we’re not alone, so head over to our Facebook page and drop a comment.

We’ll share ‘em all back on Thanksgiving Day so you can get all those warm fuzzies about living in Miami before you stuff your face at the dinner table.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE 305

So long, Dr. Snipes. Brenda Snipes, the Broward supervisor of elections, became a household name for all the wrong reasons during Florida’s recount mania. And now she’s planning to step down from her position on Jan. 4 before her term ends in 2020. The county’s elections department missed state deadlines, misplaced and miscounted ballots, and faced heated criticism from Democrats and Republicans. It’s unclear who will replace Snipes but hopefully they won’t miss their deadline in making that decision. (Sun Sentinel)

A new North Beach. Last week Miami Beach commissioners approved long-discussed plans for a “Town Center” in North Beach along 71st Street. The new laws set the table for developers to build taller buildings, up to 200 feet, with trade-offs like creating affordable housing or paying into a pool of money that would fund other improvements in the neighborhood. The plans also pave the way for micro housing units, and more spaces for creatives to make and sell their own craft products. (Miami Herald)

Some suspicious numbers. For the second year in a row the Miami-Dade Police Department, which oversees more than 2 million people, has reported a surprisingly low number of hate crimes to the FBI. According to the FBI’s report, Miami-Dade reported that only one hate crime occurred in 2017– the same number the department reported for 2016. And in general, most agencies in Florida reported very few hate crimes despite reports showing an increase across the nation.  (Miami New Times)

A petty party. The latest chapter in City of Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo’s war with a local businessman is now focused on a Friday night staple in Little Havana. The Viernes Culturales event has been a mainstay in the neighborhood for more than a decade and Bill Fuller, a co-owner of Ball & Chain who supported Carollo’s opponents in the past, is chairman of the event’s board. So Carollo has decided to host his own cultural event on the same night that Viernes Culturales happens. Why? to “bring Little Havana back alive again,” says Carollo. And it turns out that this month Carollo’s event will replace Viernes Culturales because it didn’t have the proper permits. (Miami Herald)

THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY.

We’ll see you on Thanksgiving Eve! 🦃
