Breakfast Myth No. 1: It’s O.K. to skip breakfast. Don’t do that. Your grandma was right when she said that breakfast is an important meal. Why? Sleep is a time of fasting, when your body operates on reserve energy, and eating when you wake up jump-starts your metabolic processes.

Lucette Talamas, a registered dietitian with Community Health at Baptist Health South Florida, debunks four other common myths about breakfast. (Spoiler alert: Skipping breakfast will not help you lose weight).

🍍WELLNESS TIP: Strapped for time during your morning rush? Try overnight oats. Soaking oatmeal in milk or water with your favorite healthy toppings overnight is a great, healthier alternative to that leftover slice of pizza in your fridge.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE 305

Deadly distraction. Two cyclists have died from injuries they sustained in a crash over the weekend in Davie. A driver, who admitted to police that she was distracted, hit and injured six bike riders– including members of a club called the Cycling Family Broward. For local bike safety advocates, the crash has served as the latest example of how far SoFlo has to go to improve bike infrastructure and to crack down on distracted driving. Not exactly breaking news. South Florida has been on the front lines of discussing and feeling the impacts of climate change. So the warnings of the rapid impacts of higher temperatures announced during last week’s National Climate Assessment weren’t entirely surprising. But that doesn’t change the significance of the findings, which forecast stronger hurricanes and high costs if leaders don’t actively work to prevent climate change in the coming decades. Literally monkeying around. Back in the 1930s, way before Miami was a major metropolis, it was still an extremely weird place. Because back then, the West Flagler Kennel Club decided to host greyhound dog racing with monkeys serving as tiny jockeys. We can’t shoulder all the credit for this weird exhibition though. Monkeys were used as jockeys in California first then later took to the tracks in Palm Beach, St. Petersburg and Jacksonville. Thankfully, the Humane Society eventually stepped in to stop the strange practice. (Miami New Times)

“Some very, very bad decisions…” That’s how former Biscayne Park police chief Raimundo Atesiano described his department’s conspiracy to frame three black men for burglaries they didn’t commit. Why? So the department could claim to have a perfect record for solving property crimes. For orchestrating that plan, he’s been sentenced to serve three years in prison. (Miami Herald)

It’s not just your phone. If you’ve had issues with the ParkMobile app in Miami Beach, it’s not a conspiracy against you and your iPhone. An update to the app has caused problems from residents looking to pay for parking, and the company is working to fix the issue by the end of the week. In the meantime, you can pay through the app’s website, or call 1-877-727-5714 and pay over the phone, or check ParkMobile’s help site. (Miami Herald)
