It’s always winter in West Kendall

THE PLACE: Kendall Ice Arena, Miami-Dade County’s only ice sports center, opened its doors in West Kendall almost 20 years ago.

THE STORY: At this West Kendall spot, the temperature always runs below 50 degrees. They offer ice hockey and figure skating training programs, summer camps as well as ice skating classes for all ages and levels: from tots to adults. The arena has two ice rinks separated by an arcade. One rink is used mainly for classes and training and the other for leisure, which features a live DJ on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. And next year the arena will celebrate its 20-year anniversary.

FUN FACT: Robby McNamara, an ice skating instructor at Kendall Ice Arena, competed at three Four Continents Championships and won the Australian national title in the 2009–10 season.

QUOTABLE: “There’s a great depth to our skating community right here in Miami, which was very surprising when I first came along [from Australia]. I had no idea what to expect and it was a good surprise.” – Robby McNamara

CHECK IT OUT: Kendall Ice Arena is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and until midnight on Saturdays and Sundays. You can come for the arcade games, a leisurely skate or book a birthday party, event or class with Robby here.

If you’ve ever been to a co-ed gym, maybe you’ve witnessed or been on the receiving end of men’s pick-up lines, comments about women’s bodies, or manspreading across the machines.

“Whether they’re being mansplained to like I was, being asked out, or being sold a personal training package by a pushy or flirtatious male employee, most women I know have had a workout disrupted by a man at some point,” Julia Sullivan wrote in Self in August 2017.

These uncomfortable situations are why some women choose to only work out among other women.

Luckily, South Florida is home to several women-only gyms, including Rzone Fitness, S.H.E. Fitness Studio, and Women Only Fitness Boot Camp.

Luis Behar, co-owner of Rzone Fitness, said after 20 years in the fitness industry, he and his partner Glenn Greer opened a fitness center “to cater to women who weren’t getting what they needed and what they deserved” from other gyms. Now, they have two locations in Miami-Dade with two more on the way and offer a free class to first-timers.

“They’re not getting bothered,” Behar said about why women like the gym, which employs male and female trainers but only caters to female clients. “They don’t feel like they have to dress to impress. They’re not intimidated. They push each other, motivate each other, and have a great experience always.”

What’s new in the 305

Adding to the amendment. Amendment 4 in last year’s midterm election restored voting rights to any felons who completed their sentences and hadn’t been convicted of murder or sexual offenses. But Republican state lawmakers say the amendment’s interpretation isn’t clear enough, and have garnered support for a bill that would require felons to pay off court fees and other charges before registering to vote. Democratic leaders and other advocates say it’s a step too far, especially since former felons have already begun registering to vote. (Tampa Bay Times)

A quick goal. Bringing a Major League Soccer team and a stadium to SoFlo has been a long, winding road. But the latest plan – building a stadium in Fort Lauderdale – was actually pretty swift. Fort Lauderdale commissioners approved a plan, only about two months after it was initially presented to the city, that would give Inter Miami a home for its first two seasons until they finalize plans for a permanent home at the Melreese Country Club’s golf course in Miami. Construction is set to begin on the Broward site in July and the team’s owners expect the work to be done in time for the start of the 2020 season. (Sun Sentinel)

Not budging. The approval of the largest commercial project in Coral Gables history meant change for a lot of nearby residents, but one family is holding out. The Capotes have decided not to sell despite threats and six-figure offers to sell their longtime home. And they’re hoping that they won’t have to leave even as their house is eclipsed by cranes and construction trucks. (Miami Herald)

And speaking of the Gables… They’re weeks away from an election and the two candidates for mayor both seem set on tearing down a nearby trailer park in an area just outside the city. The park, which houses about 90 trailers with mostly elderly residents, sits in a section of unincorporated Miami-Dade that the city is considering adding to its boundaries. (Miami New Times)

SOME KID-CENTRIC NEWS…

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been letting y’all know about our goat yoga event, Get Down with the Kids. Well, the goats just sold out!

It’s probably for the best because we were running out of puns to make about baby goats 😉. If you already got tickets, we’ll see you on Saturday. And if you missed this one, stay tuned for more events coming your way!

See ya tomorrow, Miami.
