What Miami is talking about

It was only a matter of time before there was a Florida connection to the impeachment inquiry surrounding President Trump.

Two SoFla businessmen — Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman — were arrested as they tried to board a one-way flight out of Washington’s Dulles Airport Wednesday night. The duo have been charged with campaign finance violations, and they’ve also been accused of being involved in a business deal involving a Ukranian gas company.

Parnas and Fruman have been big names in SoFla real estate, and have homes in Boca Raton and Sunny Isles Beach. They’ve also admitted that they worked with President Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani to get information on apparent wrongdoing by U.S. officials and Joe Biden’s son Hunter.

They’re also facing accusations of moving foreign money through a company called Global Energy Producers to support elected officials — including contributions to Sen. Rick Scott and Gov. Ron DeSantis. Yesterday afternoon, DeSantis announced plans to return the contributions.

In other news…

In lighter news that involves heavy boxes, Technique Records is relocating from its current location on the north side of Northeast 79th Street all the way…across the street. The record store is moving its vinyl collection and vintage movie stash to a larger building later this month. (Miami New Times)

The University of Miami gets plenty of love from local sports fans. But actually attending the private college is usually out of reach for local low-income residents. The school hopes to change that next fall through the “UM Within Reach” program. Students and their families will still have to pay, but The U’s new program aims to help them close the gap through scholarships and grants. (WLRN)

And here’s a weekend longread. It’s all Alberto Carvalho’s celebrated, and occasionally controversial, 11-year career as the superintendent of Miami-Dade Schools. It includes his start as an immigrant from Portugal, how he rose through the ranks, and last year’s “Carvalho Show” as he considered leaving the 305 for New York. (Miami Herald)

The crown jewel of Brownsville: Historic Hampton House

Today’s to-do: A bike ride in Brownsville

Dade Heritage Trust is biking Brownsville this Sunday.

The Miami non-profit will feature the historic neighborhood in its ongoing community bike tour. Its mission? To explore the stories and locations that make Miami unique.

Sunday’s tour will include buildings like the Historic Hampton House, where from the 1950s to the ’70s, some of the most influential African-American entertainers, athletes, and civil rights leaders stayed and performed. Other highlights include Georgette’s Tea Room and the home of Gwen Cherry, the first African-American woman to serve as a state legislator in Florida.

The cost for the bike tour is $5 for DHT members and $10 for non-members. Ready to two-wheel it around Miami? Reserve your spot today.
