In a time when much of the world remains locked down, creatives in Miami and Montréal are fostering new connections between the two cities. Our very own O Cinema has partnered up with FilmGate Interactive in announcing The Montréal/MIAMI New Narratives Lab, a new initiative for digital, forward-thinking storytelling. Here’s hoping we’ll start scarfing down poutine and croquetas side by side sooner rather than later.
The Miami-Dade County Commission voted 8-5 last Wednesday to reinstate the county’s defunct Independent Civilian Panel. The panel would ostensibly empower residents to oversee Miami-Dade law enforcement and pursue complaints about wrongdoing. However, it may yet be vetoed by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who junked a similar measure in 2018.
Bayside Marketplace has filed suit in its, well, pursuit, to evict several tenants for not paying rent. We spoke a lot last week about the importance of supporting local restaurants facing hard times: Although none of the of the defendants named by the downtown shopping mall are Miami-born businesses (the Hard Rock Cafe is headquartered in Davie) the move is a grim harbinger of what many are facing.
We didn’t get a chance to cover this one last week, but the gross remarks by Katie Miller — Broward County native, University of Florida alumna and press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence — are worth taking heed of. “[The Department of Homeland Security] sent me to the border to see the separations for myself — to try to make me more compassionate — but it didn’t work,” she said. “If you come to America, you should assimilate. Why do we need to have ‘Little Havana’?” Sit down, man.

Don’t forget their names: George Floyd. Breonna Taylor.
They died at the hands of police, reminding our country of just one of the many instances where extreme bias and systemic racism was present throughout our criminal justice system.
Join YWCA South Florida’s 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge and dive into intriguing content around criminal justice reform, with topics ranging from the damaging — and often fatal — effects of racial bias and over-policing on Black and Brown communities, to how life after prison for former convicts can often be just as difficult as time spent behind bars.
Discover actionable ways to help dismantle racism by joining YWCA South Florida in their ongoing fight to eliminate racism, empower women and stand up for justice. Sign up for the challenge today at www.ywcasouthflorida.org or contact Angelica Ramcharran at [email protected].
