Things to do on the startup scene this week

There are some big names making a pit stop in the Magic City this week, including Michael Seibel, the CEO of Y-Combinator, one of the best known startup incubators in the country. Also, Black Tech Weekend is upon us. Enough said.

Tuesday, Feb. 21

Urbanism Summit — ”Join South Florida’s entrepreneurial community of urbanists, policy makers, business leaders, technologists and innovators for a day of discussions and professional networking.”

Brainfood: Patrick McGinnis | The LAB — Patrick J. McGinnis is a venture capitalist and private equity investor who wrote the bestseller, “The 10% Entrepreneur: Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job.” Knight’s Matt Haggman is moderating.

The Creatives, Change Makers and their Source of Inspiration | The LAB — “A lunchtime chat on creativity, serendipity and happenstance of teachable life moments.”

Wednesday, Feb. 22

Lunch & Learn- Concept to Reality: How to Patent your Innovations | The LAB — Learn how to protect your innovations by filing for a U.S. Patent.

The BETTER FOOD MOVEMENT | MDC Wolfson – This conference brings together business leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and influencers from the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean to discuss the latest innovations in food sustainability, network with culinary entrepreneurs, and to find out how trendsetters are using digital media to grow the better food culture.

Thursday, Feb. 23

TechCrunch Meetup & Pitch-off — TechCrunch is hosting a pitch-off that will see 10 Miami startups compete for a chance to get a table at TechCrunch’s annual conference later this year.

An Evening with Michael Seibel, CEO of Y-Combinator — Refresh Miami and Black Tech Week bring you a chance to talk with Seibel on life at a prominent incubator and the importance of having a supportive environment in order to grow effectively once you’ve received funding.

Black Tech Weekend – That Seibel talk is the kickoff for Black Tech Weekend, which is the 23rd to the 25th. It’s one of the biggest tech events of the year. We could sum it up for you, but that wouldn’t do the lineup justice, so just check out the preliminary run of show here. Tickets are on sale through Feb. 22.
