Book Fair is the biggest festival of nerdery in all of Miami, so obviously it’s something we look forward to every year. There’s something for every type of nerd, too. Here are a few of our fav events for you to geek out on:

If you’re a political junkie, don’t miss Wednesday’s main event, An Evening With Donna Brazile in Conversation with Ana Navarro. These two brilliant women are important leaders and rebels in their own parties. The discussion should be lit.

If you’re a foodie, snag a spot at Thursday’s Booking the Cooks and sample recipes from cookbooks of local farm-to-table chefs like Norman Van Aken, Cindy Hutson, and Allen Susser.

If you’re a comic book geek, head to Drink and Draw at the Standard on Thursday night to see comics luminaries duke it out and sketch your own way to glory.

If you’re a culture vulture, Patti Smith is who you want to see. On Monday night, take a trip inside the creative genius of this goddess of arts and letters with an intimate discussion of her new book, Devotion (Why I Write).

If you’re the literati, An Evening with the National Book Award Winners and Finalists on Friday is the most clutch event. You’ll catch all the literary luminaries at one reading and spend way too much on signed copies of their books. (Can one ever spend too much on books, though? Nah.)

If you could definitely win RuPaul’s Drag Race, spend your Monday night at The Porch for Drag Queen Bingo, a sneak peek of Miami Light Project’s The Bearded Ladies, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert Karaoke. You better work.

If you’re a mystery maven, check out Noir at the Bar at the Porch on Thursday where writer Alex Segura will host celebrated crime writers. Plus, WLRN reporter and banjo balladeer Wilson Sayre and her band The Wilson Slayers will be picking old-time jams about murder and mayhem between readings.

Surfs down, brah. Tensions have been rising between kitesurfers and beachgoers near 25th Street on Miami Beach, thanks to a few incidents involving collisions. While city officials haven’t officially banned the watersport, they have erected a lifeguard stand at 26th street and are telling kiteboarders to catch waves at the beach on 76th Street. Ouch. Miami-Dade is the country’s most expensive place to rent an apartment, according to a new study by Apartment List. This news is totally unsurprising to everyone who pays rent here, especially to the 34 percent of Miami renters who are spending over HALF their paychecks on rent. (Miami Herald)

In hot water. The National Flood Insurance Program — responsible for covering flood damage for more than 5 million households — is broke, leaving tens of thousands of Americans helpless after recent hurricanes. The New York Times has the rundown on exactly how and why the system is broken.

Not the rum! President Trump’s new Cuba policy regulations took effect yesterday, banning Americans from doing business with certain hotels, stores, tourist agencies, and yes, even two government-run rum makers — 180 entities total. Election updates. Miami’s mayor-elect Francis Suarez, who won with 85 percent of the vote on Tuesday, is wrapping his head around his new job, calling it “an out of body experience.” Meanwhile, two candidates for Miami commissioner are waiting for a recount to find out who will square off with Joe Carollo in a runoff election on November 21. Runner-up Alfonso “Alfie” Leon had only 16 more votes than third place Zoraida Barreiro, a margin so narrow that it triggers an automatic recount, scheduled for this morning. (Miami Herald)
