Last week, President Trump called Haiti a “shithole” country.

He did that, local Haitian-American writer Fabienne Josaphat says, because he knows nothing about Haitians, in Haiti or in the U.S.

#Winning. Actor Tyler Perry came to town for the annual 5,000 Role Models of Excellence breakfast yesterday. He only planned to give a speech, but he was so moved by the event that he ended up handing over a $100,000 check to the organization as well. (Miami Herald)

Wheels up. The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. protest went down again this year as ATV and motorbike riders swarmed local streets in an anti-gun violence demonstration. Unlike past years, it went off largely without any incident – most importantly, no deadly crashes. (Miami Herald)

The future is here. Brightline launched this weekend, and it’s official: People are in love with the free wifi, USB charging stations, and Jetsons-like bathrooms. This is what it’s like to ride these ultra-modern trains. (SFBJ)

Supercharge me. The good news: Brickell City Centre now has a Tesla “Supercharger” station in the parking garage. It’s the first of several coming to the 305. The bad news: There’s no more free parking at the mall. (Curbed)

Speed bumps. The Magic City Bike Collective’s mission is to encourage more locals to ride their bikes by providing free tools for repairs and lessons on how to DIY. But since it set up shop in Omni Park, it keeps hitting one particular roadblock: thieves stealing its stuff. Every time that happens, the collective has to close down until it raises enough money to buy new tools. This time, it says it might just have to move. (Miami New Times)

Not so fast. There’s a bill moving through the Florida Legislature that would require elected officials to give up their current office in order to run for federal office. That affects several SoFlo politicians running for Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s seat, including Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen-Gonzalez, who says she’ll sue if the “resign-to-run” change passes. (Miami Herald)
