YOU CAN RUN THIS CITY

Ok, so you totally missed the chance to sign up for this year’s Miami Marathon & Half Marathon happening in two weeks. But don’t worry– here are some shorter 5K’s (and entry fees) to add to your race calendar for 2019.

👟 Run2Date This 5K with an open bar and DJ is good for those wanting to exercise more than their Bumble-swiping finger. At registration, you’ll receive a color-coded race bib depending on your relationship status. Green for singles, yellow for those in complicated relationships, and red for those already coupled up. Feb. 13, $65

👟 Walk for Wishes Join South Florida’s Make a Wish Foundation for their 8th annual event. The family-friendly 5K helps cover the wishes for kids diagnosed with critical illnesses. April 6, $35 for adult runners

👟 Miami Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run Take a jog alongside 28,000 of your closest friends and co-workers from more than 800 companies in Bayfront Park.  April 25, entry fee depends on your team size

👟 RunClub This isn’t a race, but a helpful guide: Run Club Network has organized a list of free running clubs around Miami. From South Beach to Homestead, they have you covered. Free, various days

🍍WELLNESS TIP: “How long does weed stay in your urine?” That was one of the most Googled questions last year. Baptist’s John Fernandez answered this question and nine other frequently Googled searches. See their answers.

WE HAVE A WINNER

We asked you all to vote on the question about Overtown’s history and culture that you wanted us to dig into and the winner is:

Why and how was the decision made to put I-95 right on top of the historic neighborhood?

We got that question from reader Stephen Keppel and it won with about 43 percent of the votes!

Thanks to everyone who voted and submitted questions! We’ll report back with an answer next week.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE 305

Meet the new governor. So it’s official. Ron DeSantis was sworn in yesterday as Florida’s 46th governor, concluding a contentious campaign season in which he defeated Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum.  DeSantis called for unity at his inauguration while also stressing conservative pillars such as low taxes, fewer business regulations and limited government. However, differing from former Gov. Rick Scott’s approach, he also vowed to protect the environment and tackle red tide.  He will also get to appoint three Supreme Court justices and has already named judicial appointees that share his values. Registering to vote never felt so good. Amendment 4, the state constitutional amendment that passed overwhelmingly in November and gives formerly convicted felons in Florida the right to vote, went into effect yesterday. It stirred emotions for some of the former felons who lined up to register, as they said they feel like human beings and American citizens again.  As a result of the amendment, Florida could see as many as 1.4 million new voters added to the rolls. Though questions still linger as to how the registrations will be handled by state lawmakers. (Associated Press)

La Croix’s “Miami” flavor? National Beverage Corp., the Fort Lauderdale-based company that makes the delicious fizzy beverage La Croix, just released two new “Miami” flavors. And people around here are not too pleased about the design of the cans. One of the new flavors called Coffea (yes, that’s how it’s spelled) Exotica features a woman in a mini-skirt with her knee perched on a coffee cup that says “habana.” The other flavor, Cubana, has a bikini-clad woman sitting on top of a large mojito. The designs have caused a stir on social media, where people say the marketing is cheesy and out of touch (the graphics kind of look like a throwback to 1950s Cuban advertisements) . The jury is still out on how the new flavors taste – they aren’t in Miami stores yet but will be soon. We might just stick to pamplemousse. (Miami New Times)

A harm reduction strategy. A new bill would allow Florida to have its own needle exchange program, which allows people to exchange used needles for sterile ones. There are more than 300 of these programs around the U.S. and they’ve been proven to reduce blood-borne diseases like HIV and hepatitis. The bill would allow hospitals, medical schools, substance abuse treatment centers and nonprofits to operate the needle exchange programs. It would also allows counties and cities to ban needle exchange. Currently, Miami-Dade is the only county in Florida that already has a needle exchange program. (WLRN)

ACLU vs. Marco Rubio. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has promised to pass a bill that would allow states to punish companies that boycott Israel and Israeli products. But the ACLU is pushing back, saying the measure violates the First Amendment right to boycott. A little background on the bill: Rubio is responding to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, known as BDS.  It’s a political campaign to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Rubio has tried to pass anti-BDS laws before and has failed. The ACLU sent a letter to Congress this week asking them to not pass Rubio’s bill in order to protect free speech. (Miami New Times)

RIP Fado. In a blow to Miami futbol fans, the Fado Irish Pub, a favorite spot to watch soccer tournaments, closed abruptly today without warning or explanation. Die-hard fans are already mourning on social media, wondering where they will go drink beer and get rowdy over matches. (Miami.com)

THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY

But if settling back into a full work week already has you looking for an after-work drink then check out this list of some the city’s newest happy hour deals. The list also includes food deals for those of you who would just prefer to sip on some water, too.
