šŸ¦Come for the ice cream, stay for the sushi

If you think this looks good, wait until you try their sushi and poke bowls.

COME FOR THE ICE CREAM, STAY FOR SUSHI

THE PLACE: If you’ve ever somehow had a craving for both ice cream and sashimi then this West Kendall spot, DIY Ice Cream Roll and Poke Bowl, is for you.

THE FOOD: Tang Chen’s restaurant offers homemade, made-to-order ice cream rolls, sushi and poke bowls. They even offer ice cream “tacos.” They’re open late and they deliver through services like Postmates and Grubhub.

TANG’S STORY: Tang moved to Miami in 2017 for the weather and decided to open up a Thai-style rolled ice cream shop. Ā The shop’s name might be a little misleading since you won’t actually be doing anything, but you can watch in anticipation as Chef Tang rolls your ice cream by hand.

SWEETNESS AND SUSHI: It’s made to order, but if you’re not in the mood for something sweet, he’s got an extensive menu for you to choose from, with sushi, sashimi, nigiri and poke bowls. It’s basically a one-stop shop, for kids and bigger kids (aka adults).

CHECK IT OUT: DIY is located east of Lindgren Road at the corner of 132nd Avenue and 112th Street, near Arvida Park. You can also order online for carryout. They’re also open late – til 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends.

Check out our video for more information on Tang and DIY. And also let us know what questions you have about West Kendall by submitting them here. Once we’ve collected your questions we’ll select a few finalists and then have you all vote on the question we’ll dig into. The questions can be about the neighborhood’s history, culture, or any other random mystery so feel free to ask away.

WHATā€™S NEW IN THE 305

A landmark decision. More than three years after drummer Corey Jones was shot and killed in Palm Beach Gardens, while waiting for his car to be towed, the officer who pulled the trigger has been convicted on charges of armed manslaughter and attempted murder. Nouman Raja, a former Palm Beach Gardens cop, now faces a minimum of 25 years in prison and possibly a life sentence. It’s the first time a police officer has been convicted for an on-duty killing since 1989, and the first time an officer has been convicted for an on-duty fatal shooting in Palm Beach County. Clearing the air on CBD. If you’ve noticed more and more advertising for CBD oils and products in the past few months, it’s not a coincidence. When the federal Farm Bill passed in December, it removed hemp from the national controlled substance list and cannabinoid products have continued growing in popularity. But things are still hazy in Florida because the state still considers hemp, a kind of cannabis plant, to be a Ā controlled substance. Lawmakers are working to create official regulations for hemp but CBD merchants say they’re unsure if they’re actually playing by the rules. (Miami Herald)

And speaking of cannabisā€¦ Yesterday, plans to allow Floridians to smoke medical marijuana cleared a big hurdle when the state Senate passed a bill to legalize the practice. The bill includes prohibitions on smoking in drug-free workplaces and in public but it’s a major step toward hitting Gov. Ron DeSantis’s March 15 deadline. Ā He said he would sue to repeal the ban on smoking medical weed if legislators didn’t have legislation on the books. The bill still has to be heard and approved by the state House. (Miami Herald)

Doing it for the kids. If you’re making plans this weekend, and need to bring your kids, nephews, or nieces along for the ride, you don’t have to go to Chuck E. Cheese’s. This list of 10 spots that are great for kids and adults, includes some solid restaurants like 222 Taco, Glass and Vine, and Ironside Pizza. (Eater Miami)

How do you define “acceptable behavior?” If you were looking to munch your way to glory at the croqueta-eating contest during the Calle Ocho fest, you may want to think again. All participants have to sign a waiver and agree to a few things like being ok with being photographed and possibly shown in news stories with a mouth full of fried goodness, and would-be contestants also have to agree to respect “social norms for acceptable behavior.” And who can really define those norms in 2019? (Miami Herald)
