Yesterday was a confusing one on the coronavirus front. For starters: The state health department put out a statement saying that anyone who returned from international travel should self-isolate for two weeks. But when a few folks pointed out the vagueness of that, they updated the mandate to apply only to people who recently traveled to countries like Italy, China, Iran or South Korea.

As for the numbers, they’re about the same as what we heard over the weekend, with one additional new case: 13 positive cases, two deaths, and more than 300 people being monitored. Meanwhile, more events have been canceled, including the Winter Music Conference, and the Miami-Dade school district is getting supplies and online classes ready in case schools close. Gov. Ron DeSantis also declared a state of emergency.

Are people avoiding cruise lines, like the U.S. State Department advised, because of the risk of getting infected with COVID-19? Not quite. Folks still made their way to ships at Port Miami yesterday and prepared to set sail. Meanwhile, in Tallahassee, our House chamber got evacuated following word that five lawmakers might have been exposed to coronavirus at a recent conference in D.C.

We promised non-coronavirus news. And it’s a timeline of how we got to debating the future of nightlife in Wynwood, the circulation of a potentially-misleading petition and two tense community meetings last week. It all started with the shutdown of the Wynwood Marketplace and has involved the neighborhood’s business improvement district, bar owners, noise complaints, and plenty of drama about what Wynwood should be when the sun goes down. Preparing while still recovering. It’s been six months since Hurricane Dorian devastated portions of Grand Bahama and Abaco in the Bahamas, and the hardest-hit areas are still recovering while the next hurricane season creeps closer. Some neighborhoods are struggling to get water clear enough to drink and supplies are still low. (WLRN, Miami Herald)

Some (potentially) encouraging news. It looks like state lawmakers want to protect the state’s $370 million affordable housing trust, judging from their budget discussions so far. It would be a major shift from the usual routine of using big chunks of the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund for other budget items. (Tampa Bay Times, Pulptown)

We’re one week away from Florida’s presidential primary. And while many of the names you’ll see on the ballot are out of the race, it’s still a chance to do your civic duty!

Early voting is going strong in Miami-Dade and will continue through this weekend. You can vote at any polling place during early voting, regardless of where you’re registered, and polls are open every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. — except for this Saturday and Sunday, when they’re open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can find the full list of polling places here.
