🙏 We don’t need much...

Hey, Miami. We’re a pretty lean machine here at The New Tropic: We don’t pay for office space, we don’t own printing presses, and we don’t take home six-figure salaries (or anything close to that, FWIW).

We don’t need much to get through tough times. But we do need the help of our supporting members — and we could use a few more right now.

That’s why we’re asking readers like you to take the leap and become a member today for $8 a month or a one-time annual payment of $96.

And if those amounts don’t work for you, we’ve launched a new crowdfunding campaign where you can donate any amount!

Your support makes it possible for us to keep cutting through the noise, separating fact from fiction, and helping you make sense of what’s happening in our city.

Thank you for helping us keep on keepin’ on. 🙏

What Miami is talking about

📊 Numbers — There are 21,019 positive cases in the state, up from 19,895 on Sunday night. And 499 deaths, an increase from 461 on Sunday night. 177,786 people who’ve been tested don’t have COVID-19. The state updates its testing numbers twice daily, in the late morning and after 6 p.m..

👀 Local impact — Miami-Dade and Broward cases have increased to 10,636 positives, from 10,003 on Sunday night. Here’s a list of testing sites in SoFla. In-home testing in Miami-Dade County is starting today and is open to senior citizens and adults living with disabilities.

Broward County’s elections department is sending vote-by-mail forms to all registered voters who haven’t already requested a mail ballot. It’s unclear if Miami-Dade will follow suit, but the 305’s elections department does plan to promote voting by mail.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced yesterday that he is working on short-term and long-term plans for adjusting to life in a post-coronavirus world, but there’s no official timetable for when those plans will roll out. And speaking of timing…

🗣️ Response — How long should we practice social distancing? Florida surgeon general Scott Rivkees said we may need to avoid large gatherings and keep ourselves isolated until a vaccine is ready — something that experts have suggested could be at least a year away. He didn’t elaborate after making that announcement at a news conference.

Our state unemployment website has been a major source of frustration for Floridians and, until some recent updates, was still crashing and causing problems. Part of the reason for those weeks of poor performance? The website was running on outdated servers and tech. Need a paper unemployment form to file a claim? Here are the county libraries where you can pick up and drop off the forms.

And how is coronavirus impacting campaign season? Well, it’s not slowing down spending. Democratic and Republican candidates are spending millions on TV ads for the presidential race and some competitive congressional contests.

🏨 Business impact — Local hospitals are hoping to get more federal support from the first round of the CARES Act stimulus package. The federal government promised about $30 billion for the facilities, but places like Jackson Memorial Hospital received about $16 million — despite being one of the largest hospital systems in the country. Now the guidelines are changing to provide more funding.

Carnival Cruise Line has also pushed back a potential restart date for cruising from May 12 to June 26.

Closures, orders, and cancellations — Here’s a roundup of curfews and mandates that individual cities, towns, and villages in the 305 have ordered for their residents.

✅ Other helpful info — The Herald put together a list of resources for folks seeking unemployment help, child care, and some useful hotlines. Here’s a look at new operating hours for grocery stores, including hours designated for senior citizens to shop. And here are lists of local food spots offering takeout and delivery from the New Times and Infatuation Miami.
