Frankly, Friday couldn’t have come sooner.
It’s a day ending in y, meaning Florida’s once again broken its record for new coronavirus cases recorded in a single day. As reported by the Miami Herald, Florida’s Department of Health added 10,109 fresh cases of COVID-19 to the state’s caseload yesterday. Florida’s total number of documented cases is currently 169,106, with Miami-Dade accounting for 40,265 of those.
Sadly, it’s the highest per-county count in the state.
*deep sigh* However you choose to spend this weekend, all we ask is that you do it safely. Per Reuters, “Florida, with 21 million residents, has reported more new daily coronavirus cases than any European country had at the height of their outbreaks.”
Taking in the above alongside this week’s news that the U.S. federal government, in its infinite wisdom and compassion, bought up the world’s supply of remdesivir — one of the only drugs proven to counter COVID-19 — and that pharmaceutical companies may be able to charge thousands of dollars for treatment, it’s hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel.
Which is why we’re going to have to spark some flames of our own. Read on to learn more about some ways Miamians are fighting to ignite change right here, right now.
