Has Art Basel inspired you to start your own collection? Here’s some expert tips

If you’re visiting Art Basel this year and you’re inspired to level up from an art admirer to an art collector, our partners at Commissioner have some great advice to share from one of Miami’s most accomplished gallerists and dealers.

Earlier this month, Commissioner’s collectors and patrons gathered in Miami for a masterclass on how to build an art collection with gallerist and art dealer David Castillo. Catch a glimpse into our intimate session in the gallery surrounded by the work of artist Xaviera Simmons from her recent solo show, Sundown.

The conversation was wide-ranging and informative, touching on points about the business of art, how to value collections, and what artists to watch. The biggest takeaway? Figure out what you like, what you can afford, and start by buying what you love.

“If you love it and it’s within your budget, that’s what truly matters. Choose objects you love, you want to live with and look at, all the time.” Castillo said. “If they become famous, great!”

Castillo holds degrees in History and Art History from Yale University and the Angelicum in Rome, and assists private clients in building their collections in addition to managing David Castillo Gallery, which opened over 12 years ago. Learn more about Castillo on his website or visit him before Art Basel Miami Beach ends this weekend.
