You don’t need to be an urban planner to change public spaces

Since it started out in 2013, The Miami Foundation’s Public Space Challenge has been granting hundreds of thousands of dollars to community members, organizations, businesses, and nonprofits interested in transforming Miami’s parks and public spaces.

Ileana Collazo, owner of Collazo Art Studio and one of the Public Space Challenge’s inaugural winners, talks about what it was like to apply and how her grant money allowed her to install wooden benches and hand-painted flowerpots decorated by local artists to help celebrate Little Havana’s burgeoning art scene.

This year, The Miami Foundation is investing $305,000 to make Miamians’ top ideas a reality. Everyone in Greater Miami can submit an idea to the Public Space Challenge between March 7 and April 6 to help make our city a more vibrant, engaged place to live.
