What Miami is talking about

If all the discussion over Democratic presidential candidates eating pork chops and two rounds of debates haven’t made it clear, the 2020 election talk isn’t slowing down any time soon.

With that discourse in mind, Florida’s Democrats have set up an election hotline aimed at answering questions about election law and responding to any issues folks have with voter registration or voting on Election Day.

State Democratic leadership says the hotline is aimed at fighting against voter suppression tactics. And given the recount (sorry, too soon) madness and confusion in the 2018 midterms, we’re sure any extra clarity for voters is a good call.

The hotline is 1-833-868-3352.

In other news…

School districts may have to move more quickly when teachers commit crime. The state board of education is set to require school superintendents to send email notice within 24 hours if a teacher or administrator is arrested, convicted, or accused of serious crimes like murder or sexual misconduct with minors. (Tampa Bay Times)

You’ve got a chance to decide on some big state spending. After admitting to deceiving the Environmental Protection Agency a few years ago,  Volkswagen is set to pay about $2.7 million to the feds — $166 million of which will go to Florida. The state’s department of environmental protection put together a spending plan, and they’re asking Floridians to comment and respond via email by Friday. (WLRN)

In super awkward news… a Golden Beach cop isn’t too happy about his five minutes of internet fame. The officer is suing the company in charge of Uniform Dating, a site aimed at helping first responders and military members find love, because he says they used his photo without his permission in an ad for the site. And why is he especially upset? The officer is married with kids and definitely not single. (Sun Sentinel)

Today’s how-to: Discuss a budget near you

Last month, we put together a primer on the Miami-Dade County budget and broke down the process, looked at what’s on deck to get more funding in the next fiscal year, and when the county’s budget hearings will happen.

But in that primer, we only gave info on the county’s hearings, and the meetings taking place in Miami and Miami Beach. Since we know you all live like you live here in different cities, towns, and villages, we decided to do a quick roundup of when and where municipalities are hosting their budget hearings next month.

Check out the list on our website.

Let’s get active.

Three ways to get you and your kids active

School supplies have officially flooded store shelves and the first day of school is just around the corner.

As summer comes to a close, we wanted to round up a few ideas to help you and your kiddo (or nephews and nieces) out of the house before school mornings kicked in.

Head over to our site to learn more about a baby boot camp, gymnastics classes, and when to hit up FunDimension for 30 percent off games and attractions.

One more thing

Got an idea for how to boost census responses in underserved communities? Then check out this grant application from Miami-Dade Counts. The initiative is a collaboration between several organizations, including folks like Radical Partners, The Miami Foundation, FIU’s Metropolitan Center, The Knight Foundation and a bunch more.

The grant funding will range from $5,000 to $25,000, but you’ve got to act quickly because the deadline is tomorrow.

Have a great Wednesday, Miami.
