Florida’s under a stay-home order until at least April 30 but we wouldn’t be surprised if that gets extended well into May. So with that in mind we started thinking about what life might look like when we can safely head back into the great outdoors.

We recently asked folks on Facebook: “What are you most looking forward to doing when this is all over?” Here are their responses:

“Window shopping at Dadeland.” —Bea Llama-Rosabal

“Matheson Hammock being repaired/reopened.” —Helen Gynell

“[Getting] back to work…did I say that?” —Lynda Carson Scheuermann

“Getting together with family and friends.” —Louise Viscel Mercurio

“Eating sushi and going on a vacation.” —Laura Hill

What are you looking forward to doing when we can safely explore the 305 again? Hit reply to this email or head over to our Facebook page to add your own thoughts. And thanks for helping us keep our eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel, y’all. ✨

We’re here for you, Miami

“I love New Tropic. I look forward to reading the stories and narratives that touch upon so many things that speak to me in my life. Becoming a member to support the platform was an easy decision. I also make sure to share the information with others.” —Yvette H.

We’ve managed to keep this newsletter free for everyone during the COVID-19 crisis thanks to nearly 270 supporting members — like Yvette — who make this work possible. Can you chip in $8 a month to join them?

You can also join for a one-time annual price of $96. And if those amounts don’t work for you, we’ve launched a new crowdfunding campaign where you can donate any amount!

Thanks, as always, for your support. ❤️

What Miami is talking about

📊 Numbers — There are 19,895 positive cases in the state, up from 18,986 on Saturday night. And 461 deaths, an increase from 446 on Saturday night. 165,008 people who’ve been tested don’t have COVID-19. The state updates its testing numbers twice daily, in the late morning and after 6 p.m.

But there’s been dispute over some of the numbers in those reports in recent weeks as things like pending test results are being underreported. According to the state’s daily reports, about 1,300 people are waiting for COVID-19 test results but that number doesn’t factor in testing from private labs so it’s likely much higher.

And the ZIP code data on the state’s dashboard are also slightly misleading as the numbers reported there may show people who were tested for coronavirus in a particular ZIP code but might not actually live in that area.

👀 Local impact — Miami-Dade and Broward cases have increased to 10,003 positives. Here’s a list of testing sites in SoFla. Testing restrictions are changing at the drive-thru site at Hard Rock Stadium, which will now be open to folks who aren’t showing symptoms but might’ve been exposed to COVID-19.

Need a paper unemployment form to file a claim? Here are the county libraries where you can pick up and drop off the forms.

The county and University of Miami medical school researchers are conducting a new test to see, among random parts of our local community, who has been infected with COVID-19 to learn more about how the disease is spreading.

🗣️ Response — COVID-19 is continuing to spread across different local and statewide agencies as multiple Miami police officers have tested positive, along with at least seven Florida prison system employees and nine employees of the state’s Department of Children and Families.

State leaders say they’re ready for a surge of hospitalizations but only if the latest projections for the state remain the same, which can only happen if Floridians continue strong social-distancing measures.

Speaking of some of those measures, at least 16 people have been arrested for violating curfews here in Miami-Dade and some parts of the state are threatening to jail people without bail if they violate stay-home orders. The practices come at a time when advocates are calling for a reduction in prison populations as COVID-19 is beginning to spread in those facilities.

🏨 Business impact — Condo dwellers are adjusting to life without the gyms and restaurants they’re used to accessing by making a lot of the same adjustments many other businesses and residents have made. Property managers are hosting online programming, delivering food to residents and starting up book clubs for their tenants.

Closures, orders, and cancellations — Here’s a roundup of curfews and mandates that individual cities, towns, and villages in the 305 have ordered for their residents.

😊 Some bright spots — If you’re running out of recipes to try — or just want a deal on a big meal — Pollo Tropical is selling marinated, ready-to-cook whole chickens for $5. They’re also selling larger portions of their rice and beans for $5, and the regular menu (including vegan options) is still available.

✅ Other helpful info — The Herald put together a list of resources for folks seeking unemployment help, child care, and some useful hotlines. Here’s a look at new operating hours for grocery stores, including hours designated for senior citizens to shop. And here are lists of local food spots offering takeout and delivery from the New Times and Infatuation Miami.
